Alaska Coast Guard Causes a Stir

Here is a good example why you should never launch a flare unless you have a real emergency.  Periodically groups such as the Power Squadron will have a flare launching demonstrations.  We always inform the proper authorities before we execute said demonstrations.
We hope that the various government agencies contact each other about the demonstration.  Most people have never set off a flare.  It is a good idea to practice setting off a flare in a  non emergency situation.  So that you understand what happens and are more proficient in the stress of a real emergency.  If you would like to put that experience under your belt, contact a local unit of the United States Power Squadrons.  They should be able to direct you to a proper demonstration.
