Dave Wilson is a test engineer at Volvo Penta. He recently sent me an email with the following information that I would like to share with you.
Here's a quick check
to ballpark how much ethanol is in your gasoline:
- Get a 100mL
graduated cylinder with some kind of cap.
- Pour in 90mL of
gasoline (make sure you shake it up first).
- Pour in 10mL of
water.
- Shake vigorously
for about a minute.
- Let settle for
several minutes.
- View the reading on
the graduated cylinder where it changes from water to gasoline, anything above
10 (original amount of water) is approximately the amount of ethanol

It's kind of scary
how easily water is absorbed into this fuel and the ethanol and water separate
out from the gasoline. Makes you wonder what's in the bottom of your
tank!
